Toxic Mushrooms and Acorns: Fall Hazards That Send Pets to the Vet

Autumn brings vibrant leaves and crunchy acorns—but also hidden dangers for curious pets. Both wild mushrooms and acorns can be toxic if ingested.

Mushroom Toxicity

Many wild mushrooms contain toxins that can harm your pet’s liver, kidneys, or nervous system. Signs of mushroom poisoning include:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Drooling
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Tremors or seizures
  • Loss of coordination

Because it’s impossible to tell which mushrooms are safe, prevention is key.

Acorn Hazards

Acorns can cause gastrointestinal upset, obstructions, or, in severe cases, kidney or liver damage. Pets that chew on acorns or ingest multiple can experience serious health consequences.

Prevention and Action

  • Supervise pets outdoors, particularly in wooded areas.
  • Remove mushrooms and acorns from yards and play areas.
  • Contact your veterinarian immediately if ingestion occurs.

If your pet has eaten a mushroom or acorn, call us immediately—early care can prevent serious complications.
