Kennel Cough: Signs, Symptoms, and Treatments

What Every Dog Owner Should Know
If your dog has been at the dog park, boarding facility, or groomer recently and suddenly developed a harsh, persistent cough, it might be kennel cough. At Partners Animal Hospital Noda, we understand how concerning this contagious respiratory infection can be for pet parents—and how important it is to know when and how to act.
What Is Kennel Cough?
Kennel cough, medically called Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD), is an inflammation of the dog’s upper airway caused by several bacteria and viruses. It spreads easily where dogs gather, such as boarding kennels, daycare centers, dog parks, or training classes.
Recognizing Kennel Cough Symptoms
Symptoms usually develop within a few days of exposure and can include:
- A loud, hacking cough (often described as “honking”)
- Gagging or retching, especially after coughing
- Sneezing or nasal discharge
- Mild fever
- Lethargy or reduced appetite (in some cases)
Most dogs stay bright and alert, but the cough can be persistent and uncomfortable.
How Is Kennel Cough Treated?
In many cases, kennel cough clears up on its own within two to three weeks with supportive care. Treatment may include:
- Cough suppressants to keep your dog comfortable
- Anti-inflammatory medications if needed
- Antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected
- Limiting exercise and exposure to irritants like smoke or dust

Prevention Is Key
