Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL/ACL) Tears in Dogs: What Owners Should Know

CCL tears—similar to ACL injuries in humans—are one of the most common orthopedic issues in dogs. They can be sudden, painful, and drastically affect mobility, so knowing what to look for and how to respond is essential.

What Causes a CCL Tear?

The cranial cruciate ligament stabilizes the knee joint. Tears can occur due to:

  • Sudden trauma (jumping or twisting)
  • Chronic ligament degeneration
  • Obesity, which adds stress to joints
  • Certain breeds prone to ligament weakness, like Labradors and Rottweilers

Symptoms of a CCL Tear

  • Limping or lameness in one hind leg
  • Difficulty rising or jumping
  • Swelling or pain around the knee
  • Changes in gait or reluctance to exercise
  • Sudden inability to bear weight

Not all tears happen suddenly—some develop gradually, leading to intermittent lameness.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Veterinarians typically use physical exams, X-rays, or advanced imaging to confirm a CCL tear. Treatment may include:

  • Surgical repair for active or larger dogs
  • Conservative management with rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy for smaller or less active dogs
  • Weight management and strengthening exercises to reduce stress on the joint

Early intervention prevents further injury and improves outcomes.

If your dog shows signs of hind limb lameness, call us or book an appointment for evaluation and guidance on treatment options.
