Avoiding Heatstroke in Pets

Keeping Your Fur Family Safe When Temperatures Rise
Summer in Charlotte means lots of outdoor fun for pets and their people—but it also brings a serious risk: heatstroke. At Partners Animal Hospital Noda, we want to help you recognize, prevent, and respond to overheating so your pets stay safe and comfortable all season long.
What Is Heatstroke?
Heatstroke happens when a pet’s body temperature rises to dangerous levels, overwhelming their ability to cool down. Unlike humans, dogs and cats don’t sweat all over their bodies—they mostly cool off by panting and through their paw pads. This means they can overheat quickly, especially in hot, humid weather.
Who’s Most at Risk?
- Brachycephalic breeds (think Bulldogs, Pugs, Persians)
- Senior pets or those with heart or lung disease
- Overweight pets
- Pets left in cars or confined spaces without ventilation
- Very active pets exercising on hot days
Signs of Heatstroke
If you notice any of the following, act fast:
- Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
- Drooling or thick saliva
- Bright red or pale gums
- Weakness, confusion, or staggering
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Collapse or seizures
What To Do If You Suspect Heatstroke
- Move your pet to a cooler, shaded area immediately
- Offer small amounts of cool (not cold) water
- Use cool, damp towels on their body and paws
- Avoid ice baths—they can cause shock
- Call us right away or head to the ER if symptoms are severe
Preventing Heatstroke
- Never leave pets in parked cars—even for a few minutes
- Provide plenty of fresh water and shady spots outside
- Limit exercise during the hottest parts of the day
- Use cooling mats or fans for indoor comfort
- Keep a close eye on your pet during outdoor activities
Questions or Concerns?
Heatstroke can be life-threatening, but with awareness and prevention, you can keep your pet safe all summer long.
